‘Soucek’s characters seem downtrodden. But the strength of the carving of these woodcuts imparts a gravitas that denies the emotive symbolism of the daily descent.
The strong compositional narrative of the
prints gives them a modern, almost futurist, twist that belies the
heavyweight theme’. (Nigel Frank, Art consultant
at Clifford Chance).
These woodcuts
focus on the banality of everyday life, targeting characters with
particular traits and moods. I became aware of my journeys; where
urban energies seem to exercise their greatest influence on people.
We negotiate these times by de-personalising others around us, to
make our journey seem as though it doesn’t exist. This helps to
conjure up narratives, figures are watched from behind, faces rarely
seen to give expression or personality.
By recording the
banality of the everyday, a tension is created through the sensation
of being in a crowd and the invisibility to others around. I create
black and white and coloured woodcuts printed on Japanese paper.
Multiple plates are used for multiple colours all original prints in
limited editions.
